Over the past few years in the last decade or two, the role of internet in the lives of each and every person in this world has increased to a great extent. Internet has emerged as a powerful tool for education. Development of computer software has gained crucial importance on people’s lives. Moreover it seems utterly impossible to perform in any sphere of human life without this dominant instrument. Therefore the education of people through internet has become a reality. It is a confluence of all kinds of information related to each and every field of education. It also allows teachers and students, sitting in far flung areas, to interact, share and exchange information. In the past few years various academicians, teachers and students have started looking into its benefits and made lot of attempts in the field of education. Internet is playing a crucial role in Open and Distance learning. Since lots of videos are freely available in public domain students and people across the world are benefited through it. Now teachers and students, anywhere in the world, can connect and meet live in the Virtual Classroom for an online interactive class. The collaborative web conferencing environment enables you to communicate synchronously using video and audio or through text chat, and to share presentations, documents and images on an interactive whiteboard. Virtual courses (a synonym is online courses) are courses delivered on the Internet. "Virtual" is used here to characterize the fact that the course is not taught in a classroom face-to-face but through some substitute mode that can be associated with classroom teaching. In a virtual classroom information is passed through hypertext courses, audio and video based courses, animated courses, web-supported text book courses, etc.

Internet has also allowed broadcasting educational events, lectures, and even educational television and radio channels on web. Various bloggers have started publishing articles on different topics related to education. They also post links of websites which provide articles, notes, and educational books. There are lots of websites which allow you to get information on various topics and upload and publish your notes and articles on web. A number of universities and academic institutions have made their books and study material online and many are in the process of doing so. Though Internet has a great role to play in the dissemination of information, its potential has not yet been exploited to the full extent. Nevertheless, in the coming years, it’s going to play crucial role in diffusion of knowledge.

There are various methods of learning through internet. The education of people in many formal and also informal methods has been started through various web sites. This has caused many lay people to understand concepts that they never understand before.

There are some methods of educating various groups of people through internet and the role played by internet in education of people.

  1. Formal education: There are many methods in which people are able to get formal education through the internet. There are many schools and also colleges that are placed in remote areas of the world where there are no adequate infrastructure available. Other than the lack of infrastructure, there is also a dearth of quality teachers in these places. This makes it imperative for the presence of internet for these people in such remote place to learn. The presence of internet through improved communication facilities in every nook and corner of the earth has been the great plus.

  2. Informal education: There are also various informal education methods that are used by the people from all parts of the world to learn new things on the internet. Free lessons are used by all kinds of people and they learn all these possible things from the internet. The only disadvantage of these informal methods of learning is that the lessons that are provided free of cost cannot be always reliable as these are not of good quality.

  3. Educational and tuition sites: There are also many tuition and educational sites that are present on the internet that also can be used by the person to learn many things. These sites are supported with funds from various organizations and also governments and so provide educational opportunities for the under privileged. These educational systems are the best methods of providing learning for the masses.

One more thing should also be mentioned here. The Internet can improve the contact between the parents and the school. The parents cannot only watch the activities of the school on the Web. They can often observe the work of their own children and see the performance results in important assignments. There is also the possibility of active participation on the work of the school.

The way our children use the Internet depends on their interests. And what they are interested in depends on the environment they live in. There are many influences. One of the most important ones is the function of the family and the climate at home but attention should be paid to what the children actually do with it. If a computer is to be used as a teaching aid, certain guidance from the parents and teachers is needed. The ideal situation would be if the teachers and parents agreed on a certain strategy. The teachers should know who has a computer at home and what tasks can be done by it. This fact can then be taken into account when handing out assignments and projects.

We may consider as proven today that the ICT influence the current development of educational methods. Although the use of the technology does not necessarily have to lead towards positive changes in the educational results, there is no doubt that there is a certain impact. This is the reason why this study material mainly focuses on the forms of this impact and the possible risks accompanying it.

So, where should the real positive impact of the ICT be found? Its real effect is in accelerating and amplifying the instructional processes. It is not only able to influence the constructive or instructive methods, but it can also amplify any good or bad method, which is not quite the same. The way of using the technology depends, above all, on the knowledge, skills, and talent of teachers and parents. Their task is to foster this implementation in the desired direction. In case they don't succeed, the ICT could support the use of unsuitable methods resulting in the negative impact on the development of the whole human civilization.

For that reason it is important for the professionals, teachers, parents, politicians, and the whole public to pay attention to this matter. All of them should try to force the most suitable incorporation of the ICT into the education process. There are many possible ways but one thing should not be forgotten. And that is that the role of education in forming general attitudes of the youth is important.
