Matricaria chamomilla, German Chamomile
may – tri – kair – e – ah kam – o – mil - a

  • Description: Valued for its herbal use for centuries, German chamomile is a dainty, aromatic herb with finely-divided foliage and white and yellow daisy flowers.

  • Origin: Europe.

  • Height x width: 2 feet tall and wide.

  • Growth habit: Upright and bushy.

  • Foliage: Finely-divided with numerous linear segments, light green, apple scented.

  • Flowers: Many small, terminal golden-yellow disk flowers that may or may not have white ray flowers. When the plant does have ray flowers, the ray petals fold tightly down against the hypanthium (calyx tube) at night, leaving only the round disk buttons visible from above during the mornings. Ray flowers also disappear on individual flowers as they start to senesce.

  • Culture: Full sun and well-drained soil. Tolerates either dry or wet soil once established. Grows best in cool climates but will tolerate some heat. Does not flower during the heat of summer. Self-sows.

  • Uses: Border, herb garden. Nice as a filler when planted among larger flowers.

  • Other facts of interest: Also known as M. recutita.

  • Propagation: Seed.
