If You Forget Me

by Pablo Neruda

I want you to know

one thing.

You know how this is:

if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,

if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly

you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad

the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots
remember
that on that day
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day

each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

Love has no expiry dates

“If you Forget Me” by Pablo Neruda is about how if his lover would ever leave him, he would wait any day for her to return to him. Even if his lover moves to another land, he would follow. “Everything carries me to you” (line 10) Although, their love would cause separation, if the girl started to love him less, the boy would start to love her less, but he would still have an open heart for the girl to come back again. The literary devices used by Pablo Neruda in “If You Forget Me” are alliteration, hyperbole, oxymoron, imagery metaphor, personification, and symbolism. The purpose of the use for imagery metaphor and personifications in his poem was because every little thing he was comparing it to had it’s own special meaning. For example Neruda had given a log, human qualities to show the passion he has for the girl, even if she got old. “ the wrinkled body of the log” (line 10) He had set the mood with the use of seasons. “at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn” (line5) This poem was used as an extended metaphor which allowed the readers to really think about the depth of each line. Each stanza was parallel to some other form in the poem, which also helped to understand how Neruda felt about all the possibilities that might trigger the girl to return to him. “little by little you stop loving me/ I shall stop loving you little by little” (stanza 15)
