Continental Holds Groundbreaking for Test Center Yancheng

Important step that strengthens Continental’s Research &Development capacity to match robust development in China

Shanghai/China, April 13, 2015. Continental, a leading international automotive supplier, breaks ground for a new test center in cooperation with China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC) in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. The new test center Yancheng occupies 2,500 square meters, including office rooms and test workshops, which integrates testing facilities and Continental’s global know-how to carry out system tests and vehicle applications on new technologies and products, for example advanced brake system, high performance tire and so on. The test center Yancheng is expected to start operation one year later.

“The establishment of the test center Yancheng greatly improves Continental’s R&D capabilities, enhances our test possibilities for safety technologies and customized, high quality products for the Chinese market in accordance with our strategy ‘In the Market for the Market’. With strong support from CATARC, we are dedicated to building a leading R&D center to give fast local response and technological support to meet the diversified market needs”, said Dr. Ralf Cramer, Member of the Executive Board of Continental and CEO of Continental China.

Continental commenced its business in China in 1994. In order to better satisfy local and global customers’ need, Continental has accelerated its pace of investment in China, bringing along high quality products and excellent local R&D capabilities. Continental has been seeking more opportunities for extending its footprint in China for further localization. So far, Continental Group has expanded its presence in 25 production locations, 15 R&D locations and 1 winter test center, representing a workforce of over 23,000 in the country, and has business relationship with all major customers in China. Continental winter test center is located in Heihe, Heilongjiang Province with a 7,000,000-square-meter lake and 30,000 square-meter land area for ABS and ESC testing. Besides the winter test center, the new test center in Yancheng will further complete Continental’s R&D capabilities for safety solutions in China.

CATARC is an important institution for the management of auto industry and was established in 1985. This company assists the government in such activities as auto standard and technical regulation formulating, product certification testing, quality system certification, industry planning and many more tasks.

The focus is on a high level of system competence and the integration of components into the safety concept ContiGuard. Chassis & Safety employs more than 38.000 people worldwide and generated preliminary sales of approximately €7.5 billion in 2014.
